A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks

A Walk To Remember“Every April, when the wind blows in from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High. It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he’d fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town’s Baptist minister. A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out. Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter’s life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood.”

Years ago, when I first discovered Nicholas Sparks, this was the first novel that  I read by him. It was actually purely coincidental. I believe it was about seven years ago when I was watching movie trailers on youtube (cause that’s what we did back then in my town) when I came across the movie “A Walk to Remember.” I thought it looked good and since I was into chick flicks, still my favorite genre, I decided to go ahead and watch it. Long story short, I feel in love with the movie (it’s one of my favorites) only to discover that it was based on a book. I was ecstatic! That very same day I went to our public library here in town, checked out the book and finished it by morning. For those of you who haven’t read the book but watched the movie, please read the book (even though you know what happens)! The movie and book aren’t exactly the same. I loved the movie but the book is even better. Landon Carter, town’s richest kid who worries more about his public image than anything else, meets Jamie Sullivan, town’s sweetest and most loved kid. As Jamie and Landon started spending more time together little changes began to occur within Landon. Changes he never knew were happening. Yet those little changes that he didn’t notice right away were turning him into the person he was meant to be. A person who he had tried really hard not to become. My favorite part of the book was when he discovered himself to be in love with Jamie. He truly loved her and didn’t even care what his friends thought. It was so sweet of him! Jamie was his angel sent from above. Without her, he wouldn’t have become who he needed to be. Their story was heartwarming. Their love for each other reminded me of Romeo and Juliet, but without all of the deaths. They truly loved each other. I really enjoyed reading this book and hope that you do too!! 🙂

  1. A Walk To Remember is the first and only book I have read by Nicholas Sparks. While I’m not the biggest fan of romance, this book manages to convey a compelling tale of love, and it’s transitions. What could be called as a ‘coming of age story’, a Walk To Remember expresses several of the doubts, fears and insecurities, we as readers have often encountered throughout our lives as well as the invaluable lesson of holding on to and cherishing what truly matters.
Despite the narration often appearing bland and monotonous, it’s stunning topic and identifiable characters make it a read worth the while.
